This market is not about who wins. It’s about how many things happen in a game: goals in football, points in basketball, games in tennis, etc.
The bookmaker sets a line (e.g. 2.5 goals). You bet if the final total will be under or over that line.
Football: how Total Goals Over/Under works
You bet on total goals in 90 minutes plus stoppage (extra time does not count unless it says so).
- Under = fewer than the line.
- Over = more than the line.
Example with a 2.5 line
- Under 2.5 = at most 2 goals in the match.
- Over 2.5 = at least 3 goals in the match.
Reading the common totals lines
The line you’ll see most is 2.5 on Total Goals Over/Under:
- Choose below or above 2.5.
- The “.5” just splits the outcomes: 0–2 vs 3+.
- Who scores does not matter.
Similar for:
- 0.5 → Under wins only at 0–0; Over wins with 1+ goal.
- 1.5 → Under wins with 0–1; Over wins with 2+.
- 2.5 → Under wins with 0–2; Over wins with 3+.
- Higher totals (3.5/4.5/5.5) show up in open games or high-scoring leagues.

Acca Boost
An Acca Boost gives you extra winnings on a multiple (acca) when it lands. In the UK you’ll see two main types. A Bet Boost raises the price on one leg. An Accumulator/Winnings/Profit Boost adds a percentage to your acca’s return. The second looks bigger because it’s on the full payout, but value depends on the final price you get.
There are rules. You usually need a minimum number of legs and minimum odds per leg (for example 1/2 or 1.50). Most football offers are 90 minutes only unless it clearly says extra time is included. Cash Out normally makes the offer ineligible. Many promos cover selected leagues and markets only (e.g. 1X2, BTTS, Total Goals Over/Under). Player props and some in-play markets are often excluded. UK books do not allow related contingencies (e.g. BTTS and a scorer that depend on the same event) in the same acca.
Watch the limits. There is usually a bonus cap and a maximum payout per sport or event. Use £ for staking and check both fractional and decimal prices if it helps.
Quick tip: mix your lines on Total Goals Over/Under (for example 1.5 and 2.5) instead of stacking the same risk. Compare your expected edge with the effective price after the boost. If the boost turns a marginal acca into fair value, take it. If not, skip it.
What counts (and what doesn’t): core rules
Rules vary by sport and by bookmaker. Always read the market text before you place a bet.
- Football: unless it says otherwise, settlement is on 90 minutes + stoppage time. Extra time and penalties do not count.
- Basketball and ice hockey: totals usually include overtime (OT).
- Ice hockey shootouts are often settled as +1 goal to the game total (check your bookie’s rules).
Football variants and combos for totals
Straight totals markets
- Total Goals Over/Under [N] (full match): are the goals under or over N (e.g. 1.5, 2.5, 3.5)?
- Over/Under [N] 1st half: first 45 minutes + stoppage only.
- O/U [N] 1st + O/U [N] 2nd half: combos (Under+Under, Under+Over, Over+Under, Over+Over).
- Team totals Home [N]: only the home team’s goals.
- Team totals Away [N]: only the away team’s goals.
1X2 + totals blended
1X2 + O/U [N]: pick the correct pair.
Examples:
- 1 or Over [N] / X2 + Under [N]
- 1 or Under [N] / X2 + Over [N]
- 2 or Under [N] / 1X + Over [N]
- 2 or Over [N] / 1X + Under [N]
- X or Under [N] / 12 + Over [N]
- X or Over [N] / 12 + Under [N]
BTTS with the 2.5 totals line
- BTTS or Under 2.5: win if both teams score or there are fewer than three goals.
- No BTTS + Over 2.5: one team (or none) scores and the total is 3+ (e.g. 3–0, 4–0).
Other mixes are possible (e.g. BTTS or Over 2.5 / No BTTS + Under 2.5).
Asian totals (football)
Asian Over/Under uses whole, half, and quarter lines. In football this usually means 90′ + stoppage (no ET unless stated).
- Whole numbers (2.0, 3.0…): Over 2.0 wins with 3+; 2 = push/refund; 0–1 = loss. Under 3.0 wins with 0–2; 3 = push; 4+ = loss.
- Halves (1.5, 2.5…): no push. Over 2.5 wins with 3+; 0–2 = loss. Under 2.5 wins with 0–2; 3+ = loss.
- Quarters (2.25, 2.75, 3.25…): stake splits across the two nearest lines. Over 2.25 = half Over 2.0 + half Over 2.5 (3+ wins all; 2 = half push/half lose). Under 2.75 = half Under 2.5 + half Under 3.0 (0–2 wins all; 3 = half push/half lose).
Why use Asian totals? They smooth swings: you can have half-wins or half-losses instead of all-or-nothing.
Variants you’ll see
Team Asian totals (home or away only).
First-half and second-half versions.
In-play totals that move with tempo, xG, shots in the box, cards, and attacking subs.
Checks before you bet
Does the market include OT (often yes in basketball and ice hockey)?
Cash Out rules and any bonus caps.
Stake sizing: quarter lines (±0.25) can help manage risk.
Other sports: how totals work
Basketball (match points totals)
Totals almost always include OT. A common NBA line is 228.5: Over wins with 229+. With a whole line (228), a push is possible.
Key drivers: pace/possessions, eFG%, three-point volume, injuries, back-to-backs, recent form.
Example: Under 228.5 @1.90 with £10 → £19 back if it finishes 228 or fewer.
Useful: team totals, half totals, player totals (points+assists+rebounds).
Tennis (games totals and set totals)
Main markets: total match games (e.g. 22.5) and player games totals. No OT.
Watch surface, styles, serve/return stats, H2H.
Example: Over 22.5 @1.85 in a best-of-3 between two big servers; 7–6 6–7 6–4 = 36 games → Over wins.
Format matters: men’s Slams = best-of-5 (more chance of Over); WTA = best-of-3. Also 1st-set totals (e.g. 10.5), tie-break yes/no.
Ice hockey (goals totals)
Standard Over/Under lines (e.g. 5.5) usually include OT and the shootout. Many bookies settle the shootout as +1 goal to the total (check terms).
Drivers: goalie save %, xG & dangerous shots, power play/PK, 5-on-5 pace, schedule.
Example: Under 5.5 @1.95 with in-form goalies and low xGA/60.
Also: team totals, period totals, Asian 5.0/6.0 (push possible). Always confirm whether OT is included.
Postponed, suspended, or abandoned: how bookies settle
If a match is postponed or suspended, bets often stand if it finishes within 24–72 hours; otherwise void/refund.
First-half bets often stand if the first half is completed. Always check your bookie’s rules.
Implied probability and the bookie’s margin
Implied probability for decimal odds is 1 ÷ odds.
Examples: 1.80 → 55.56%, 2.10 → 47.62%.
For a two-way totals market, add both implied %. Over 100% = margin (vig).
Finding the margin
Example: Under 1.90 / Over 1.90 → 52.63% each, total 105.26% → margin 5.26%.
Getting “fair” probabilities (no vig)
Divide each implied % by the total: Under (fair) = 50.00%, Over (fair) = 50.00%.
Fair odds = 2.00 for both.
Another case: 1.83 / 1.83 → 109.29% total (margin 9.29%); fair remains 50% each (2.00) even though you’re offered 1.83.
Why this matters
You see how much vig you pay. You can compare bookies and pick lower-vig markets. You can compare your view to the fair %: if yours is higher, there may be value.
Correlation limits and bonus blockers
UK bookies do not allow related contingencies in the same acca (e.g. BTTS + a scorer that depends on the same event). Such combos may also void or block any boost. Avoid mixes your bookie disallows, or the bet may be rejected.
Stakes and swing control
Pushable lines (2.0 / 3.0) can justify slightly higher stakes.
Half-goal lines (2.5 / 3.5) call for lighter staking.
Quarter lines (±0.25) help smooth swings.
Stats to check before you bet
Football: xG, shots in the box, tempo, form, absences, weather, schedule.
Basketball: possessions, eFG%, three-point volume, foul/bonus, back-to-back.
Ice hockey: goalie SV%, xG/60, PP/PK, 5-on-5 pace.
In-play signals for totals
- Football: check tempo and chance quality first. An early red card (first 30 minutes) often lifts the totals line by 0.25–0.5. With 10 men there is more space, so Over is more likely, especially if the favourite still has 11. Attacking subs show intent. Strong Over signs: xG ≥ 1.2 by half-time, many box shots, low PPDA. Lean Under if the game is scrappy, key creators/finishers are off, or a narrow lead is being managed. Watch weather, heavy pitch, and late minutes (after 80′, set pieces matter).
- Basketball: project possessions as live pace × 48 minutes. Early team bonus means free throws and clock stops, pushing totals up. Totals lean Under with effective zones (2–3/3–2) or when stars have 3–4 fouls. Monitor live runs and time-outs; long runs can push the Over.
- Ice hockey: many penalties = power plays → more xG → higher Over risk. Under looks better with hot goalies and few high-danger chances. Pulling the goalie late (last 2–3 minutes) raises totals; consider Over or the pressing team’s total Over.
